Cat Water Needs
Cat water is another basic cat need. When we first got Simba, we purchased 2 shiny silver bowls - one for cat food and right beside it, one for water. The cat water should be changed daily.
This system worked for a while. I'm not sure if it was because we didn't change the cat's water often enough or what but shortly there after it became quite common to see the profile of the kitten's backend sticking up over the toilet bowl while he lapped up the water in the bowl. I'm not sure if it was because the water was cooler or fresher, but this became our feline's favorite watering hole. (As you can see this is a good reason for not using the chemical bowl cleaners in your toilet tank if you have kittens.) We tried to discourage this behavior by keeping the lids down. That only led to the cat scratching at the lid until we lifted it to allow his royal highness access to the bowl. It was either that or chance getting the lid all scratched up by his claws.
Our cat has also been known to come for a drink of water when the tub has bath water in it. Once bath soap or shampoo / conditioner is added to the water, he no longer is allowed to drink the bath water. He has also tried to drink from the sink.
Then we came across a pet / cat fountain that ran constantly and had fresh running water available at all times. There is a style available for single cats and one for multiple cats. It just needs to have water added as required. Wash the bowl portion about once a week to get rid of food bits and algae. The filter should be changed every three months (for one cat). Now it’s only on rare occasions that the big porcelain bowl in the bathroom gets used.
Try different things, see what works for you. If you are happy allowing your kitty access to the toilet bowl, so be it.
