Cat Hairballs

Cat hairballs can result in loss of appetite, constipation and bowel problems. Hairballs usually are formed as cylindrical shapes in the intestine and are often vomited up.

Have you ever noticed that when kitty is going to expel a hairball, she will leave the bare floor and run over to your favorite chair or a high traffic area of your carpet to expel the hairball? Why they do this is a mystery but it may be that kitty thinks she will be able to cover it easier there than on a bare floor. If you aren’t quick enough, she may even consume the hairball she just expelled.

Eating grass is almost like a laxative to cats. They are frequently seen vomiting after eating grass.

There are hairball remedies on the market that can be given to kitty weekly. These remedies help eliminate hairballs by lubricating kitty’s intestines and thus allowing easy passage of the hairball.

If the hairball becomes impacted in the intestines, it may become necessary to take kitty to the vet to have it removed surgically. This is an extreme situation and does not occur frequently in cats.
