Declawing Kitty
Declawing should only be considered as a last resort. If kitty is so bad that the only two choices are giving up on her or have her declawed, then and only then should a declawed cat be considered as an option. If you do decide to declaw kitty, you must be prepared to keep her for the rest of her life. Also once declawed, she will have to remain an indoor cat for the rest of her life.
Once a cat is declawed, the cat
- won’t be able to climb trees to escape from dogs
- can’t defend herself properly if attacked
- may refuse to use her litter box as a result
- may bite frequently
- show increased nervousness
- hides more often
- becomes easily startled
- uses her teeth more making giving pills, grooming and bathing more hazardous
To declaw kitty is extremely painful. She may not be able to stand on her feet until her toes are fully healed. She may suffer from tender paws and lameness for the rest of her life.
